The Myrtle Beach area in South Carolina is also known as the Grande Strand. Extending from the Little River to Winyah Bay it has over 60 miles of white beaches encompassing the towns of Murrells Inlet, Surfside Beach, Garden City, and of course Myrtle and North Myrtle. The area was nicknamed this because the word strand in German means beach. Years ago, there was an actual grandstand at one end of the beach, hurricanes have since demolished it.

Challenging golf courses are abundant, excellent seafood restaurants and shopping centers abound, especially there at Broadway at the Beach, have all made Myrtle Beach a famous tourist area, and of course tourists have to stay somewhere so luxury resorts and condos have been built with the most ideal settings for Canada geese and shore birds. Commercial areas are on the rise as well with stormwater ponds in abundance, lakes, and rivers all making it an ideal setting for geese. 

Canada geese and other shore birds, mostly seagulls, feel weather changes and when hurricane season is at its peak the birds will flock inward to safer areas, these are most likely coves, canals and retention ponds, whether it be fresh water or brackish water. This is usually where some of the finest golf courses, home-owners associations and residential and commercial sites are built. People love living along the water but so do Canada geese and this is where the problem arises.
